Reason #857 that I refuse to live in a densly populated inner city.

It's not even my car and I wanted to kick the crap out of the car in the back.

The Subaru could've been there first.

I have seen people (seemingly) bump into cars on purpose while parking if they see one of the bumper guard things, just because they feel like they "can".

Also, people suck at parking.

Would be unnecessary if bumpers still looked like this, instead of fragile painted body work.

Ha! It wasn't. I walked by earlier. I took the pics on the second pass when I saw the idiotic parking job.

I understand the need. I have the option of a densely packed street or an off street space with 5 inches either side of the car with the mirrors folded in.

Kinja'd!!!

You can see what I choose. If I didnt have the tiny space I'd probably consider some kind of bumper guard. Wouldnt stop all the keyings that seem to happen though...

I see these all the time in NYC, and have for some years. I'm not sure they're a thing in other cities. Where did you get these pics?

You know what this is right? This is going to make people care even less about parking.

Yes. As demonstrated in the second photo.

Thats my own car parked in the little yard space I have here. It's one of the busiest cities in the north of england although parking is slightly better than i imagine it is in NYC. I've seen a set of guards on a nice Jag XJ around here but otherwise people seem to just accept the dents and scratches. Most of the cars around here have at least scrapes on the bumper corners from bad parking.

I have always wanted to get a set like that, but a little bit more durable. say, rusty steel pyramids all along the length that would absolutely abuse the bumper of the offending car. Maybe throw some concrete on lightly, just in spots to give it that added paint grabbing power.

(don't hate me if it's fake but) I thought he could clear pretty. If anything, hitting it at that angle just pushes the back end further into the desired parking spot?

They'be been around for a while. Personally, I think they're great. I've never seen ones that wrapped all the way around like that though, just ones that hung out of the trunk.

They also won't stop the fascia from cracking or bending if someone is very negligent, but do prevent minor scratches and damage.

It's like boxing gloves, which protect your fingers and face from external damage, but allow for much more hard hits to the face, so when damage does happen it's heavy internal brain damage.

Kinja'd!!! SteveLehto > GhostZ

looks like a lot of effort to eliminate scratches - while inviting bumps.

Kinja'd!!!1

Honestly, the occasional touchup paint and hour of work to clean up the scratches would be better than carrying those around with you.

These things are bought by people who don't know enough, or don't care enough, OR lack the ability to properly care for their car, yet they are self-conscious enough not to be one of "those people" who just has a car with scratches on it.

Thats what I was wondering. It seems to me most people do this because they are in a hurry and get lazy with their driving, I'm afraid the pad would invite people to squeeze in when they normally wouldn't try. It would help against that person who just doesn't give a crap about anybody else.

That, and I hate what it does to the body lines of the car.

I agree. If I have to take a nice car to the city I just go through the hassle of setting 20 minutes extra aside, and have a nice walk. Sometimes you can score a front street spot where you are the last car. It's really a shame it has to be like this given how expensive cars are for everyone.
